On Monday, 19 April the West Rand Child Protection Hotline held a contact session with some members of the Muldersdrift Police at Featherbrooke Village in Ruimsig.

Present on the day were Danie van Loggerenberg from the West Rand Child Protection Hotline, Odette M Read from Mediators Incorporated, and Sergeants Ndou and Tshifularo from Muldersdrift Police Station.

The discussion was based on the plans for Child Protection on the West Rand, Child Protection Week, school visits during Covid-19, the messages received via the Hotline, and how the children in the area can be better protected.

“We have linked up with Danie as we believe that mediation and facilitating high-conflict parents are strongly rooted in the best interest of the child. Their initiative inspires us and is making enormous changes daily in each of these children’s lives. We facilitate parenting plans, arrear maintenance and section 22 agreements among conflicting families. We thank you for every single child that has been helped by this Hotline,” said Odette.

According to Muldersdrift Police spokesperson, Sergeant Ndou, the police are involved with the West Rand Child Protection Hotline in that they cannot fight crime alone, and they need partners.

“We need the community to assist us in fighting crime and obviously helping our children in the process, and the West Rand Child Protection Hotline is one of our partners in doing this,” said Ndou.

The West Rand Child Protection Hotline is available to children, parents and anyone who needs to report alleged child abuse, child neglect, bullying or anything related to a child that is undesirable.

The Child Protection Hotline’s contact details for the West Rand are 060 819 3897 or email to westrand@toysforafrica.org.za.

The national number is 076 900 7151 and the national email address is childprotection@toysforafrica.org.za.

“The number is available via SMS, WhatsApp or phone call, the reason being that most children do not find it comfortable to phone a random stranger, but are more comfortable to send messages.

“Due to Covid-19 we have not been able to visit a lot of schools lately but the plan is once Covid-19 is over we will resume our school visits,” said Danie.
