WATCH: Spend Sunday afternoons with books and nature

Parents and children spent their Sunday afternoon enjoying books and music at the first Story Time in The Park event.

Residents young and old were treated to the first Story Time in the Park in the Wilgeheuwel Extreme Park on Sunday, 25 April. As the sun began to set, the session kicked off with jolly songs to get all the kids comfortable before they were treated to books on different child-friendly subjects.

Geraldine Anderson said she and the three co-founders were inspired by a similar initiative at The Wilds Nature Reserve where children were treated to story-time sessions. “Each one of us has kids and we thought this is a beautiful initiative to bring to the West Rand. You always see kids floating around and what a better opportunity to implement something that is educational and brings the community together,” she said. She added that she hoped the activities would encourage the children to fall in love with reading.

Zoë Makola started the sessions by playing her guitar, as music is another element that is used to tell stories and entertain the children. As a fun and relaxing family activity, the Story Time in the Park sessions are expected to be held every last Sunday of the month at 4pm.

“We are looking for people who are interested and have children’s books to offer as we would like to set up an exchange library box where people can bring a book and swop it for another,” Geraldine concluded.
