Crazy hats and fine bowls on show at Florida North Bowls Club
Ladies from all over the Sables District letting the feathers fly
The spirit of competition is not only about victory, but appreciation, respect and comradery.
The Florida North Bowling Club rolled out the red carpet for the fairer half of the Sables District, hosting a Ladies Day on 6 May. Over 90 female lawn bowls enthusiasts embraced the ‘A feather in my cap’ theme, showing up in an array of colourful plumage proving they were as competitive with their outfits as they are in pursuit of the jack.

The day began with a light breakfast before the outlandish headgear was unleashed on the greens. Teams played out a spirited tug of war over 18 ends of fours action, where after the famished women were treated to a sumptuous lunch and a few cold refreshments. Even though scores were quietly compared, the day was not about winning but letting down the hair and appreciating fun and friendship.

The day was not devoid of men, as club president Johann Lourens and secretary Francois van Aswegen took the chance to dote on their female members, doing all the legwork to and from the bar and kitchen. Part fundraiser for the club, a portion of the day’s proceeds also went to helping those affected by cancer through Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

Every woman would leave Florida North with something, part of the organising committee’s emphasis on the collective spirit. “A big thank you to Florida Junction Spar for always supporting us over the years. Thank you to all the clubs and their presidents for ensuring the day was a massive success,” said Johann.
