Protect you dog from being stolen

Do not let your four legged friend fall victim to dog theft

Every day community Facebook groups in the Roodepoort area are inundated with pleas from residents to help find their missing pets. Equally, animal shelters are constantly receiving lost or unwanted animals.

The manager at Roodepoort/Krugersdorp SPCA, Mandy Cattanach said there are an overwhelming number of cases of dogs being stolen. In certain areas they don’t adopt dogs because they are often stolen. “They could be stolen because of their breed – pit bulls for instance are stolen to be used for dog fighting or as bait dogs. Cats often disappear because they are eaten.”

To keep your furry family members safe, do the following:

• Ensure that your gates are never left open.
• Be on the lookout for any suspicious people, or for someone following you when you take your dog out for a walk.
• Dogs should be kept in the backyard and not in the front.
• Always have your pet micro-chipped.
• When looking for a lost pet, look at various other animal shelters in your area, and not just the SPCA.

Communications officer for Muldersdrift Police, Sergeant Mulalo Ndou said, “If you are certain that your dog has been stolen, you can open a case with the police”.
