The SPCA is in urgent need of vets and winter warmers

The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA has sadly been forced to cut back their hospital hours due to a shortage of veterinary staff.

Whether you love or hate the SPCA, there is no denying the amazing work they do – not only by sheltering animals, but by rescuing them from often terrible circumstances or abandonment.

When animals are brought in to the SPCA in need of medical care, the hospital workers and veterinarians do everything in their power to make sure the fur babies are well looked after. To meet the demand, the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA requires three veterinarians on staff; however, two of their resident vets have relocated, leaving the organisation with one vet to treat all the animals that are brought in.

Sadly, the SPCA is struggling to find veterinarians to fill the open slots, and therefore needs to cut back the operating hours in their animal hospital. Starting from 31 June and until further notice, the SPCA hospital will only be consulting in the mornings, from 9.30am to 11am from Monday to Friday, and from 9am until 12 noon on Saturdays. While this is not something that the SPCA staff wanted to do, it unfortunately needs to be done due to the lack of staff. Any veterinarians who would like to work with the SPCA and hopefully help the hospital go back to their original operating hours are requested to please contact them on 011 672 0448 or by emailing the SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach, at manager@rdptspca.co.za.

The SPCA is also appealing to any resident or potential donor to assist them in making sure the cats and dogs in their care are warm this winter. A chill so strong it makes people want to stay in bed all day can already be felt in the air, and just as humans get cold, so do our furry friends. You can make a difference in the lives of those animals who are sleeping in a kennel with only a blanket to keep them warm.

The SPCA’s winter wish list is as follows:
• Dog jerseys and jackets
• Blankets – storm blankets from PEP or Jet work the best
• Cosy dog and cat beds
• Tinned food and dry pellets
• Toys and treats for the animals (squeaky toys, cat nip, hooves)

The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA is located at 3 Nadine Street, Florida. More details regarding who they are and how you can help can be found on their website.
