Plastics – a blessing or a curse?

On Saturday, 5 June, the Friends of Kloofendal (FroK) will be joined by polymer science expert, Annabé Pretorius, to cover the topic of dealing with plastics.

The detrimental environmental impact of many everyday items and activities is becoming more of a concern to people throughout the world. With the ever-increasing number of environmental organisations popping up globally, it can often be difficult to distinguish between hard facts and sensationalism.

The Friends of Kloofendal (FroK) pride themselves on nurturing and protecting the Kloofendal Nature Reserve and, through their educational sessions, aim to give their supporters the knowledge and skills to protect whatever environment they are in. On Saturday, 5 June, FroK will be joined by polymer science expert, Annabé Pretorius, to cover the topic of dealing with plastics.

Annabé studied polymer science at Stellenbosch University, and after gaining a plethora of knowledge and experience, she formed her own company – Plastix 911. “She is the face behind the annual recycling statistics and to get the numbers, she visits at least 100 recyclers every year,” explained Karin Spottiswoode, a committee member of FroK.

Annabé will be using her passion and experience to answer some very important plastic-related questions, such as do we need all the plastics we are bombarded with? What can we do with all the plastics we have finished using? Annabé will be talking about all the plastics we use on a daily basis, and even those we don’t actually think about. Her talk will also cover what happens to the plastics we throw away.

The morning talk is being held with the main goal of educating residents in hopes of ensuring that fewer plastics end up on our pavements, in our rivers, and ultimately in the ocean. If this seems like something you would be interested in, you can book your tickets from Quicket by clicking here.

Tickets are being sold at R60 per person, including refreshments, and the talk is suitable for all ages. It will be held in the Ecological Centre of the Kloofendal Nature Reserve on 5 June from 9.30am to 10.30am.
