Providing learners with a clear view

'We value our young generation of future leaders, and it's only our pleasure to see that they enter that future with a clear view.'

During April this year, the Grade 1 learners at Laerskool Dr Havinga were visited by one of the local optometrists.

Pieter du Plessis, who used to be a learner at the school, wanted to give back to the community, and as an optometrist at Wize Eyes The Falls, the gift of being able to see clearly was an obvious choice.

On 20 and 22 April, he visited the school to do a full screening of every Grade 1 learner’s vision. “Each learner received a full kids screening. We checked the autorefractor readings, the external and internal health of the eyes, and the muscle balance,” he explained, adding that they also checked for any visual and colour deficiencies.

Pieter concluded by saying, “We value our young generation of future leaders, and it’s only our pleasure to see that they enter that future with a clear view! We loved assisting them, as vision is such an important factor in any child’s schooling. As soon as the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic passes, we will return to the school to finish the screenings.”

Lizelle Kies, the Foundation Phase Head of Department thanked Pieter, saying, “We are so grateful for this gesture from Pieter who, despite these difficult times and circumstances, rendered this service – not only to the school, but the community as well, for free. It just shows that there are still good people with good hearts, no matter the circumstances.”
