Zandspruit launches Youth Day drug-awareness campaign
Young people in Zandspruit celebrated Youth Day by raising awareness around drug and substance abuse in the community
Members of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk in Zandspruit had an awareness campaign on drugs and substance abuse on Youth day, June 16. Joined by members of the CPF and police, the youth mixed with the community to distribute flyers with useful information and to educate residents.
Executive member of the Youth Desk in Gauteng, Solomon Madiba said, “The whole community was reached and educated about substance abuse, and flyers were distributed. We reached out to community members on how they could be helped.”
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety, in conjunction with the South African Police Service has established Youth Crime Prevention Desks at various police stations. These youth desks empower young people to participate in crime-reduction strategies and community-development initiatives.
In Zandspruit the Youth Desk works with more than 60 young people to implement programmes and projects that address the social conditions that influence criminal activity. Members provide and share information to prevent crime among the youth, violence involving young people, and prevent the abuse of minority social groups.
