All the praise for Discovery health workers
A resident shares her positive experience after receiving her first dose of the vaccine. "We do have people doing their job and they deserve recognition."
The pace at which the vaccine is rolled out in South Africa rightfully has come under scrutiny, especially now that we’re in the eye of the third wave. Our healthcare workers are overworked and our overall healthcare system is under immense pressure. Nevertheless, elderly residents have shared their satisfaction with the Record after receiving the vaccine.
Horison resident, Susan O’Moore recently received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at the Community Health Centre in Discovery and could not wait to share how impressed she was with the experience and staff. “From the outside the place looks like it’s falling apart and very dilapidated, but I was so impressed. They took us in six at a time and talked to us regularly and kept us very informed. I arrived at around 11:00 and within 20 minutes I was seated. All the health workers were so professional and just amazing.”
Susan said the media often shows chaos surrounding the process, but people needed to know that there could still be good news surrounding this phase, and that there are numerous men and women who continue to provide their service to the community. She said not only were they kept informed throughout the process, but they were sanitized regularly and the possible side effects were explained to them step by step.
“You can see how tired and overworked they are, but they really deserve recognition. Kudos to them and their continued professionalism because we don’t understand what they go through. Other areas should take note, the environment was clean and spotless. There are people who are truly doing their job,” she said.
The 61-year-old said her arm ached for a few hours and she experienced some nausea after she received her vaccination, but she has been doing well ever since. She admitted that she was extremely nervous when she first arrived at the centre, but was immediately put at ease. “You don’t have to be scared,” she advised other residents.
“I will definitely be going back for my second dose. I was so impressed and I am blessed to have made new friends. A special thanks to Sister Lorraine Alexander.”
