Community reacts to Florida Lake wildlife suffering

"The lawlessness and decadence that currently prevail in our city of Johannesburg affect humans and animals.”

On Thursday, June 17 CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) was contacted to rescue an Egyptian goose that was found maimed by discarded fishing line at Florida Lake.

The goose had already lost a foot from a similar injury, and on the day the other foot fell off after the fishing line had cut off the blood supply to its leg.

Sadly very little could be done for the goose and it was euthanised as there was no possibility of survival without feet.

“Our green spaces are slowly descending into wastelands; the litter choking Florida Lake is an eyesore.

“Empty cough mixture bottles are strewn everywhere, and the birds are suffering in silence.

“The lawlessness and decadence that currently prevail in our city of Johannesburg affect humans and animals,” said Cora Bailey from CLAW.

Similar occurrence at the dam next to Key West. We have battled to catch so many and if/ when we do, they are such a mess. The kindest thing to do is humanely put them to sleep, and for WHAT?

This is tragic, it is totally barbaric to create a situation like this where wildlife suffers. Those responsible display not only their ignorance but also a total lack of pride in not only their surroundings but also their attitude to cleanliness.

Florida Lake fifty years ago was so tranquil and clean, so sad about the geese.

What a terrible fate for such a lovely innocent creature, due to complete negligence and disregard for our impact on nature.

• Valerie Terblanche

I can’t wait to get out of this world.

CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) poor baby, thank you for helping him.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
