BEPR confirms one chick left on the nest
According to BEPR photographer and observer, Johann van den Berg, they can now confirm that there is one chick left on the nest.
It has not been an easy task for Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) to confirm if both chicks are still in the nest, but could confirm through photographic evidence that one chick is being fed by the parents Makatsa and Mahlori.
With coronavirus infections rapidly increasing in the Gauteng province, BEPR monitors suspended their activities, which made it difficult for them to keep an eye on the eagles’ behaviour.
According to BEPR photographer and observer, Johann van den Berg, they can now confirm that there is one chick left on the nest.
“Every time two eggs hatch, nature has to take its course and the Cain and Abel scenario takes place. It is called siblicide and it is natural that the older chick kills the younger one,” said Johann.
On June, 10 BEPR confirmed that the second egg had hatched, and that nature would take its course through the survival of the fittest.
BEPR revealed to the Northsider that the parents Makatsa and Mahlori were doing well and were bringing in green sprays to line the nest, while prey was brought in to feed the chick.
“Members of BEPR are very excited about the latest developments at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, and hope for a successful breeding cycle to be completed,” said Johann.
