Children freed from car while parents enjoy Sunday shop
Children released by security that opened the boot of the vehicle
While picking up some extra household goods, one may get distracted and forget some other precious cargo.
Two children were rescued by security from a parked car at a popular shopping centre on June 27. A parking attendant at Westgate’s entrance five noticed two children, roughly aged eight and ten, causing a commotion inside the cabin of a Toyota Corolla. The children had been left in the car by their parents who went into the mall to do their shopping, and appeared to be locked in the car.
Westgate assisted by contacting private security, who opened the boot of the vehicle, flattening the back seats to release the children. The parents arrived back at their vehicle to find that members of the public had purchased their children beverages, as well as police officers ready to ask questions. According to eyewitnesses, the remorseful parents apologised and police allowed them to leave with a warning.
Police have yet to respond with comment, but parents are urged to be mindful of the dangers of leaving children unattended in motor vehicles. In certain cases, criminal charges could be applicable, as could the intervention of social workers.
