WATCH: Sokkie at the Winter Festival day

Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach said the purpose of the event was to raise funds, which they desperately need.

Residents danced well into the night at the Winter Day Festival on Saturday, 26 June. The event was held at Bosheuvel Country Estate in Muldersdrift to raise funds for the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA. People were treated to good food and music from some of their favourite South African artists, including Luna SA, Jacques Steyn and Bok van Blerk; and for just a couple of hours all there was in the world was sokkie.

Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach said the purpose of the event was to raise funds, which they desperately need. She explained that their centre is always full of animals. “We are always busy with prosecutions, and it costs a lot of money to get evidence. Fundraising is crucial to us keeping our doors open and continuing the work we do. We hope people enjoy the show.”

Luna SA got the crowd up on their feet with some of her own songs and few classics from artists such as Dolly Parton and Queen. She said she loves working with community organisations. “I like giving back. I think it’s the right thing to do and I wouldn’t have this talent if I wasn’t supposed to do any good with it. Today was amazing.” She enthused about her love of music saying, “The reason I sing is because it’s in my blood and I know there’s no other passion for me. Singing is my life and I want to make people smile with my voice.”

Alida Tee, who had her stall set up with the Tupperware she sells, said she heard about the fundraising event from her team leader and wanted to give back. “If I give, I can also receive. The same way I am asking the community to support me; I also have to give and show support.”

Beloved Afrikaans singer, Bok van Blerk brought the house down during his performance, which had everyone up on their feet. The singer belted out well-known favourites and a few new songs. “It’s always nice when we get gigs like these that go towards a bigger cause. The SPCA does great work and it is a privilege to be able to do a gig that’s for a greater cause,” he revealed. “We are going to do an exciting set with some new music. We released a new single recently, so it’s going to be new music and some of the old favourites, and a little bit of party in the middle.”
