Local matriculants steered in the right direction
The Higher Education Drive is an initiative to assist students to gain access to colleges and universities.
Local NGO, Save Life Africa (SLA) is currently assisting young people in finding courses that they are eligible for, and further assist them in applying for those courses at various higher education institutions.
SLA is an organisation that focuses on developing communities through education and sports.
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected their career exhibitions that were to be held in Zandspruit, Peacock and Kromdraai in July.
According to the founder of SLA, Letacia Sekanka, it is very important for young people to further their education in order to have access to a better quality of life.
“Most learners do not have access to the necessary information that is required for applying at a university as they are not aware of the available courses, and often struggle with choosing a suitable career.
“While most organisations only provide learners with prospectuses and other information packages, we go the extra mile by ensuring that young people get a place and other sources such as funding to complete their studies,” said Letacia.
SLA revealed to the Northsider that the purpose of the Higher Education Drive was to assist current and former Grade 12 learners who have no direction as to which path to follow after completing Grade 12.
As a result of the current lockdown that might be extended, SLA encourages current and former matriculants to contact Letacia on 072 918 8401 for information and assistance in applying for a course of their choice at any higher education institution.
“Every child has the right to education and we believe that if granted, this tool can break the cycle of poverty.
“Should young people be denied entry for various reasons, we often direct them to our partner organisations for internships and learnerships.
“We also provide information on other ways to upgrade their marks in order to get accepted into a higher learning institution,” said co-founder, Parson Gapa.
Virtual sessions will be held to assist young people who may need help, and emails can be directed to savelifeafrica100@gmail.com.
The SLA website is www.savelifeafrica.co.za, and has links to the various learning institutions; however, these can also be shared on WhatsApp for easy access.
