Level four is necessary, says gym owner
"I think level 4 is necessary because we as gym owners don’t want to put people's lives at risk, but we also understand how good gym is for them, so we are trying to find that middle ground.”
The new regulations for level 4 lockdown, announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday, June 27 have left many businesses, gyms and fitness centres with no other choice but to close their doors from Monday, June 28.
The Northsider spoke to the owner of Triple Threat Dojo based in Ruimsig, Wade Randall about the impact of having to close his gym due to the move back to level 4.
Wade said although his gym is closed, they are doing online training from the venue for clients to participate online.
“For the last two weeks we have been doing online classes in the morning and afternoon, and some in the evening.
“I think level 4 is necessary because we as gym owners don’t want to put people’s lives at risk, but we also understand how good gym is for them, so we are trying to find that middle ground,” said Wade.
Triple Threat Dojo falls under the South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA) and Wade revealed to the Northsider that they received letters the day after gyms were to be closed, especially since they operated in hot spots areas.
To slow down transmission of Covid-19, South Africa moved back to level 4 of the national lockdown, with regulations including a ban on all gatherings, as well as a new curfew of 21:00 and a ban on the sale of alcohol.
Travel in and out of Gauteng for leisure purposes is prohibited from June 28, and regulations will be reviewed after two weeks.
