Women’s Forum aims to make a dent in gender-based violence

The forum is backed by police, CPF and private security companies

Vulnerable as lone figures, together they form an unbreakable bond.

Tired of stories of women being left in helpless situations with nowhere to turn, a group of fed-up females have banded together to form a network of safety. The newly formed Florida Women’s Forum will tackle the societal issues that plague the mothers, daughters, sisters and friends of Florida and the surrounding suburbs.

The forum will be headed by chairlady Pinki Kekana and secretary Kogie Kirsten, and consists of women who have the same common goal to impact the lives of women and young girls. “The women’s forum was created for women in the community with other women going through abuse, drugs and several other serious issues,” said Kogie, who identifies gender-based violence as the most pressing issue that needs addressing.

An initial kick-starter event at the Florida Community Centre on Rose Street on June 19, focused on the legal aspects of domestic violence and legal assistance to community member through police and legal experts. Through regular events the forum aims to educate women on their rights and provide an outlet for them to exercise those rights in safety.

With the backing of police, community policing forum members and private security companies, resources are at the forum’s disposal. “National Security & Fire prioritises and supports all community projects and initiatives within our footprint where possible. This specific initiative inspired us to participate, as this impacts directly on the lives of women, young girls and the households of our community,” said National’s Community Development Manager, Johan Nel.

Still in their infancy, the impact and momentum of the women’s forum have been stifled by the ongoing health crisis which only amplifies the problems they wish to solve. To inquire about membership of the forum or seek their advice, contact chairlady Pinki on 076 889 4574 or secretary Kogie on 082 0877532.
