Condolences pour in for W/O Jacobs
“Being a policeman was his calling, it wasn’t a job to him."
Warrant Officer Lourens (Jakes) Jacobs from the West Rand Flying Squad sadly lost his battle with Covid-19 on Thursday, July 9. Tributes and messages of condolences have been pouring in from community members, colleagues and peers.
He was married to Captain Karen Jacobs from the Honeydew Police and they have two children.
His sister, Marina van Tonder described him as a giving man who always put other people before him. “Being a policeman was his calling, it wasn’t a job to him. He always worked longer hours because it was more than a job. We are still trying to process this loss.”
Jacobs was put on a ventilator on June 25 and remained sedated after he was intubated due to a collapsed lung.
Tributes have been pouring in for the late Jakes.
• Johan Pretorius from Fidelity ADT’s Special Intervention Unit knew him for more than a decade. “If I had a problem with a car that had been hijacked or stolen, then I would phone and he would assist me to take it to the pound, or to arrest a suspect.
“When you make a phone call and he was busy, he would always make a plan to get another member to assist. But if he was not busy, he would be the first one helping us and ensuring that we get assistance in the crime-prevention department. He always went out of his way.”
• Michael Steyn, communications officer at Honeydew CPF:
“Warrant Officer Jacobs was always one you could rely on. He was a man of his word and whatever he said to you, that’s what he stuck by.
“He was a man of integrity. I think that is how everybody will remember him. He was always there to assist everybody. If you needed help, he was one of the guys you could call.
“All we wish is for him to rest in peace. Warrant Officer, you will be sorely missed.”
• Carolyn Lanzillotti, Honeydew Sector 3 CPF committee
“This is very sad news and such a loss to the Jacobs family, friends and the community as a whole. The Honeydew Sector 3 CPF committee sends Captain Jacobs, her family and friends our condolences. We are thinking of you all during this incredibly hard time.”
