Rescued kitten in need of life-saving amputation
"After being examined by the vet, we decided that an amputation was the best option for Citrine."

Citrine, a kitten that was left at a vet in Rustenburg has recently found his way to Kitty Kazz kitten rescue in Muldersdfrift. After a physical exam, the centre was informed of Citrine’s injury to her hind leg, which would need a joint-fusion surgery.
Owner of Kitty Kazz, Karin Donald said they took the cat to a vet who confirmed that the feline would need tarsal arthrodesis surgery. “Her hind leg bone has shifted; more than likely she was kicked,” Donald explained.
Karin said not only is the procedure costly, “… there is no 100% guarantee that it will be a successful recovery. We have opted for plan B, to do an amputation. Animals adjust very well to losing a limb, and recovery is fairly quick,” she explained.

The amputation costs around R8 000. “We are appealing to the public to assist us to cover her vet bill. Citrine is currently in foster care so she doesn’t move around too much and do further damage. But we need to do the surgery as soon possible.”
The rescue centre opened its doors in May this year, and has re-homed more than 40 kittens. With breeding season around the corner, Karin pleaded with pet owners to get their cats sterilised. “One unsterilised female cat can breed three times a year and have an average of four kittens per litter. In seven years, one unsprayed female cat and her offspring can produce 420 000 cats – half of which will never reach adulthood,” she explained.
