West Rand Toastmaster mark new year
New and outgoing members of Toastmaster celebrated the new year at the recent meeting
Members of the West Rand Toastmasters met virtually on July 1 as they celebrated the beginning of a new calendar year. Under the theme of ‘New Year’s resolutions’ guests were in a celebratory spirit for the upcoming year. The meeting’s word of the day was ‘stalwart’ which means loyal, reliable and hardworking.
Allebhai’s speech, which was titled Ethical Dilemma, explored technological advancements such as self-driving cars. The orator shared the conundrum between calculative theories by self-driving cars compared to human decision-making. “In most cases traffic is caused by people due to bad driving behaviour, selfishness or just stupid behaviour,” he said. He brought forward that self-driving cars would lead to fewer accidents; however, computer algorithms could be ethical dilemmas when it comes to safety decision-making.
Oarabile Tlaleng chose a topic that everyone could relate to – Adulting: Telling it like it is. Tlalang shared his journey into adulthood from his teenage years when he was under his father’s rules, to being faced with making his own decisions as a young adult. He said reality really started to kick in when he had to buy big items such as a car, and ensuring that his budget was managed appropriately.
The Club’s Vice President of Public Relations, Nthatisi Vilakazi said the beginning of a new year comes with resolutions and exciting changes. Lesego Nhlapo inducted new exco members and thanked outgoing club office-bearers. Sikhanyisile Mabhena was introduces as the new area director.
