Wilro Park Lions spread jars of hope

Each jar makes a meal to feed four people/ They filled each jar with half a cup each of rice, soup mix, lentils, a stock cube and a packet of soup powder.

The Wilro Park Lions Club recently distributed 300 jars, each containing everything that’s needed for a delicious warm meal to feed four people.

As part of their Project 36, members of the community as well as friends and neighbours joined in the effort to collect and recycle glass coffee jars and other jars similar in size. They filled each jar with half a cup each of rice, soup mix, lentils, a stock cube and a packet of soup powder.

“On these jars we attached our ‘Jars of Hope’ labels, spreading the message ‘Kindness matters’. We also attached an instruction label on the back of the jar to add water,” Wilro Park Lions Club President Sandy van Heerden explained.

More or less water can be added to determine the thickness of the soup.

“We did have the recipe tested by our Lions nutritionist, and although it is not a huge meal we hope it will fill the hungry tummies of those less fortunate than ourselves who have nothing to eat,” she said.

So far, they have filled and gifted 300 Jars of Hope, which have been delivered to a school in Durban Deep as well as to CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare). Another batch was delivered to Lufano Day Care and the balance were given as random acts of kindness to homeless people, along with a Lions Snuggler sleeping bag, scarf, beanie and a pair of socks.

“We appeal to the public to spread kindness to those less fortunate than ourselves and donate just R36 or even a bag of the ingredients to help us fill as many jars as possible. Remember, kindness matters; we can change the world one random act of kindness at a time,” Sandy said.

“The support of our community and local businesses is much appreciated.”
