Lions roam the streets on Mandela Day
Their drop-off points included several centres and service stations in the Helderkruin, Pinehaven and Kromdraai areas.
On Sunday, July 18, residents of Wilro Park welcomed the sight of several Lions roaming the streets. Why didn’t they run in sheer terror? Because it was the Wilro Park Lions Club, of course.
Several Lions took to the streets with the aim of honouring the legacy of late President Nelson Mandela. They managed to distribute a total of 67 Jars/ Bags of Hope to petrol attendants and car guards across Wilro Park.
“We wanted to thank them for their loyal service. They are always serving their community, come freezing cold, wind, rain or sunshine. We salute them for their service,” Club President, Sandy van Heerden said.
Their drop-off points included several centres and service stations in the Helderkruin, Pinehaven and Kromdraai areas.
This also forms part of their Project 36, where members of the community as well as friends and neighbours help them to collect empty glass coffee jars. They fill each jar or bag with half a cup each of rice, soup mix, lentils, a stock cube and a packet of soup powder.

“All you need to add is boiling water. And you can add more water or less to determine the thickness of the soup. Each jar or bag serves a family of four,” Sandy explained.
In addition to the 67 Jars/ Bags of Hope they distributed on the day, they have already donated 400 jars and bags to other beneficiaries prior to Mandela Day.
“As we wish to continue with the Jars of Hope project, we appeal to the public to spread kindness to those less fortunate than ourselves and donate just R36 or even a bag of the ingredients to help us fill as many jars as possible,” Sandy concluded.
“Remember, kindness matters; we can change the world one random act of kindness at a time. The support of our community and local businesses is much appreciated.”
