Anarchy-inciting social media posts may result in jail time

"We cannot and must not stand by idle and allow criminal elements to cause havoc in the city."

On Tuesday, July 20 the City of Joburg (CoJ) issued a warning to the residents of Johannesburg through a media release to refrain from sending voice notes, tweets or messages that may incite public violence.

According to CoJ, this is a criminal offence that is punishable by a fine and/ or imprisonment of up to three years.

In the wake of the recent looting, burning and violence, every attempt is being made by the police to track and trace the perpetrators.

“If anyone becomes aware or knows of a person sending such messages they should inform the police as soon as possible. We cannot and must not stand by idle and allow criminal elements to cause havoc in the city,” said JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar.

JMPD is on high alert and is working with the South African Police Service to restore order and make arrests.

Most areas on the West Rand and in Johannesburg remained calm during the rampant looting of the past week, with residents taking a stand against the appalling behaviour.

The municipality said most public services have resumed and backlogs will be attended to accordingly.

Residents are urged to call the police on 10111 or JMPD on 011 375 5911 to report suspicious behaviour or criminal activity.

“This is not the time for hoax calls and spreading fake news. JMPD will follow up on tips of stolen goods so that these can be recovered,” added Minnaar.
