Food vouchers for the elderly in Zandspruit
"This is a way to help the community in times of need.”
The average household food basket was R4 198,93 in April this year, meaning the majority of South Africans who already live in extreme poverty hardly can afford to eat. This is according to the Household Affordability Index, which revealed that the prices of 36 out of the 44 items in the food basked had gone up.
The Mosaiek Church and the Emthonjeni Community Centre in Zandspruit are giving out 50 food parcel vouchers to senior citizens. Evelyn Gouwe explained that they started giving out food parcels in 2020 when Covid-19 became a staunch reality and many people in disadvantaged communities were left even more vulnerable. The initiative is meant for residents that are 60 years and older to provide them with basic staples such rice, bread and maize meal.
She said this initiative was born out of desperation to continue feeding communities that were struggling. “We have Feed A Child kitchens, but because of Covid people couldn’t come out and eat there. So instead of them coming to us, we buy food parcels for different communities. We can’t give them every month, but we give whenever there is something to give. This is a way to help the community in times of need.”
The church assists residents in different communities such as Diepsloot and even Mpumalanga with food. To assist in any way, contact Evelyn on 084 739 6238
