Help the Lions spread Jars of Hope

Each bottle makes a meal to feed a family of four people.

As part of the Wilro Park Lions Club’s Project 36, their Jars of Hope initiative has fed scores of hungry people. Members of the community are donating empty glass coffee bottles which they fill with ingredients for a substantial meal for four.

According to Club President Sandy van Heerden, they use half a cup each of rice, soup mix, and lentils, a stock cube, and a packet of soup powder to fill each jar.

“Each bottle makes a meal to feed a family of four people and it can be made up using more or less water to determine the thickness of the soup. We did have the ‘recipe’ tested by our Lions nutritionist and although it is not a huge meal we hope that it will fill the hungry tummies of those less fortunate than ourselves who have nothing to eat,” she said.

To date they have managed to donate a total of 300 Jars of Hope to CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare), Durban Deep Primary School and Lufano Day Care. The rest were given as random acts of kindness to the homeless along with a Lions Snuggler sleeping bag, scarf, beanie and pair of socks.

However, they are not quite finished with spreading kindness as part of this project.

“This weekend the Lions Club of Wilro Park want to deliver Jars of Hope to car guards and security guards to say thank you for always being there for us – rain, wind, cold no matter what. This will form part of our 67 minutes of service for Mandela Day,” Sandy said.

“We also want to try and spread this to folk at our local restaurants who are suffering due to job losses or short hours; those who rely on tips which they are not getting due to Covid-19. This will be an ongoing effort at least throughout July. We are all connected.”

They now appeal to the public to spread kindness and to think of those less fortunate. Members of the community are welcome to donate R36 (which covers the costs for the ingredients of one jar) or a bag of the ingredients to assist in filling as many jars as possible.

“Remember kindness matters and we can change the world one random act of kindness at a time,” Sandy concluded.
