A moment of panic as veld fire threatens property

The fire had already started moving towards a house next to the veld when a call for assistance was sent on various WhatsApp groups as well as to City of Johannesburg (CoJ).

On Thursday, July 29 panic struck and tense minutes followed when reports of a veld fire were received in the area of Little Falls.

Members of BCI Management and reaction officers arrived in the area and traced the fire to Witwatersrand Avenue.

The fire had already started moving towards a house next to the veld when a call for assistance was sent on various WhatsApp groups as well as to City of Johannesburg (CoJ).

As the fire was nearing the property, more manpower arrived to assist. The neighbour allowed reaction officers to enter his property and supplied a hose pipe to start fighting the fire.

When the first vehicle from Fire Ops SA arrived on scene, the members assessed the situation and immediately gave a situation report to other responding units from Fire Ops SA. They started clearing the fence that had by now caught fire.

Another four firefighting vehicles from Fire Ops SA arrived and entered the veld as well as the property to start fighting the fire on two fronts.

About 20 minutes later the fire was brought under control and extinguished, while a last walk-through was done with grass beaters taking care of the last traces of fire.

After about an hour the fire was confirmed to be out completely and no further threat to any adjacent properties was found.
