Only six West Rand Flying Squad cars operational
On the West Rand, 20 of the Flying Squad's 26 vehicles are in for repairs.
More than 100 cars belonging to the Gauteng Flying Squad are currently in for repairs. This according to Captain Kay Makhubela from the Provincial Police, who said 120 of the vehicles are in garages and are not operational.
On the West Rand, 20 of the Flying Squad’s 26 vehicles are in for repairs and out of commission. Makhubela said he was unable to comment on the situation on the West Rand or confirm how long the cars had been in garages.
A source from the West Rand Flying Squad acknowledged the issue. “We are struggling. There are a lot of things that accumulate. For instance, you send the vehicle in for a new clutch and it comes back with a new engine, but the clutch hasn’t been touched; and it needs to be returned. It’s a struggle.”
It is still unclear how this affects their ability to increase visibility and respond to crime on the West Rand.
