Community brings cheer and goodwill to Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital

“We thought it would be a great idea to just uplift the spirits of the staff and all the health workers that have been working so hard to keep going in these hard and difficult times."

As the late afternoon sun filtered through the rising smog of evening coal fires from the neighbouring informal settlements, tunes of inspiration filled the air at the Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital entrance as the community inspired and thanked the staff for their service during a difficult time.

On Wednesday, July 28 the community of Roodepoort together with security companies embarked on an initiative to try and motivate the staff and patients at the hospital during the pandemic.

According to organiser, Helen McDonald, the community has experienced so much death and sadness with Covid-19, and something positive had to be done.

Helen got a message out to all the communities in the area of Wilgeheuwel, Little Falls, Strubens Valley, Roodekrans, Helderkruin and as far as Johannesburg North to come out on the day to play music and make a donation to the health workers.

“We thought it would be a great idea to just uplift the spirits of the staff and all the health workers that have been working so hard to keep going in these hard and difficult times.

“It’s times like these when we really need to stand together and find some unity in our community to help others that are not doing so well at this time.

“They are certainly the heroes; we really applaud them for the difficult task they have to take on each day,” said Helen.

Members of the community contributed to a total of 600 biscuits baked by Nicole Gace from Gourmet on the Go, and it was accepted on behalf of the Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital staff by Marketing Manager, Celia de Koker.

A total of 1 000 stickers for the biscuits were donated by Compo Print, who made sure of a final touch of generosity.

Also present on the day were Pastor Wendy Mckillop from Frontline City Church who said an opening prayer, and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott.
