Rabies vaccinations kick off
Government facilities offer rabies vaccinations free of charge to cats and dogs
Residents of Muldersdrift and surrounding areas came out in their numbers to get their furry family members vaccinated on August 11 at Bidon Bistro in Driefontein. This follows a recent rabies outbreak on the West Rand.

More than 200 cats and dogs received the single-shot vaccine free of charge to curb the spread of rabies. Chief animal health technician, Dr Estelle Visser said the vaccine takes six to eight weeks to become effective. Pet owners are required to vaccinate their animals once a year.

Theresa MacIntosh, who brought her five cats to get vaccinated said, “They have had shots before. With the cases of rabies in the area, I feel relieved that I could have my cats vaccinated.”

The vaccines are being provided by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for free to cats and dogs. It is important to remember that vaccines are only valid if they are administered by a vet, a veterinary nurse or authorised animal health technician.
