Greens of a different kind in the pot at Witpoortjie Bowling Clubs
Club hosts fundraiser in honour of Women's Day
Few better ways exists to chase away the winter chill than with fine food and friends.
Witpoortjie Bowling Club made sure not to let the Women’s Day public holiday go to waste, throwing a multi-competition fun day to celebrate a well-earned day off. Either crowded around the greens, the dartboard or an open fire, club members took part in their choice of activities that doubled as a fundraiser for the much-loved community club.
The day started with a few woods, followed by an arrows session in the afternoon, but the main event that created the lunch time meat for the Women’s Day sandwich was a tasty Potjie competition. In honour of the day, three of the club’s roses where given the duty of scrutinising the iron-potted delights, as friends and family debated the various cooking methods.
After much deliberation, judges Elmarie Diederiks, Belinda Taylor and Sonja Jacobs surrendered the scorecards to the man in charge. Flip Pretorius handed down the decision, giving bronze to Thys van der Berg and silver to Jackie Peens. In the end, Ansa Fourie reigned supreme, beating her all-male competition to the prize. The simple trick to Ansa’s venison dish, according to the now-champion chef, was simply to use standard beef seasoning instead of venison spice.
Ansa received a brand-new set of knives, and prizes were also given to the best lawn bowls performances as well as the most accurate with the arrows. However, no prizes were given for the best performances at the bar as the fundraising stepped up a gear, all in the spirit of supporting women and the club.
