Lions acknowledge caregivers

'We wanted to acknowledge the work done by caregivers at frail care centres who are not always seen by the public,'

While some women woke up to breakfast in bed on Women’s Day, women of the Wilro Park Lions Club awoke with an eagerness to pay tribute to those who spend most of their holidays taking care of others.

On Monday, August 9, the Luipaardsvlei Home for the Aged in Krugersdorp, and Floroma Frail Care in Roodepoort were pleasantly surprised when a number of Lions dropped off some special ‘Shopper Bags’.

These beautifully assembled bags were all made by volunteers and donated to the Lions Club. Each bag contained packets of soup, biscuits, some sweets, something to take home for a small lunch, a magazine to read during tea time, a soft scarf and a feminine disposable mask. To tie it all together, the Lions included a thoughtful message of thanks.

“We wanted to acknowledge the work done by caregivers at frail care centres who are not always seen by the public. Even though this is our first project of this sort, it could become an annual project,” said Lion Delphine Ferreira, who came up with the initiative.

However, due to Covid-19 restrictions, they weren’t able to meet most of the caregivers.

“At Luipaardsvlei the representative was impressed with the contents of the bags. At Floroma we at least managed to see some of the caregivers who were on duty on the public holiday. They were thrilled to be acknowledged,” she said.

She would like to thank Lions Roleen Hunter and Sue Labuschagne who paid a visit to Luipaardsvlei Home for the Aged, and Amanda Hone who accompanied her to Floroma Frail Care.

“Wilro Park Lions Club is aware of the dedication and hard work that caregivers at frail care centres give. They have to work in PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) all the time and have long hours. It is only fitting that we acknowledge their commitment on Women’s Day. Our only regret was that we could not have something for all the caregivers in the vicinity,” Delphine concluded.
