PRA avoids disaster with fire hydrant project
Ninety four fire hydrants were painted during the course of the day.
The Panorama Residents Association Weltevreden Park identified and painted fire hydrants on Saturday September 18 to improve visibility.
Ninety four fire hydrants were painted during the course of the day thanks to Universal Paint and Hamiltons, who donated the paint, brushes and rollers, respectively. Chairperson of the Panorama Residents Association, Dave Baxter, said they also discovered some missing hydrants and this was escalated to Johannesburg Water to replace them.

Baxter said they employed six men for the project and managed to do four sectors. Some hydrants were particularly tricky to find because they had been paved over. “It’s important to keep fire hydrants clean as you never know when they will be needed. It is also important to ensure that grass does not grow over them. Imagine if there is a fire; it causes such a delay and that can lead to lives being lost.”

About 20 hydrants were found to be defective and Baxter said they had contacted Joburg Water to test them too. He said community members and residents who donated to the PRA enable them to keep going with the projects. “The more members we have the more we can do, as we have massive projects and a great team. We use the funds raised to fund projects like these.”
