[VIDEO] Wilro Park house goes up in flames

It took the firefighters approximately one hour to get the flames extinguished and under control.

At around 12:25 today (Thursday, September 30) emergency services were called out to a burning house on Steenbras Road, Wilro Park.

According to Steve van Eeden who is part of the Kruin Neighbourhood Watch Community Group, a layer of bituminous waterproof membrane was being laid over the roof to prevent water seeping through.

However, this technique, known as torch-on waterproofing requires a torch to heat-fuse material directly onto the roof.

It is believed that the flame of the torch was blown by the strong winds and set the roof on fire. Within a very short time most of the house went up in flames. CoJ Emergency Management Services, Fire Ops SA, Help24 and other security services soon arrived on scene to help.

It took the firefighters approximately one hour to get the flames extinguished and under control. Unfortunately it seemed there wasn’t much to salvage after the raging fire had ripped through the house.

Four people live in the house – a family of four (including a three-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy). A tenant lives in the garden cottage, which is an extension of the house.

Even though the family has lost virtually all their belongings, they are thankful that no one was injured in the horrible incident.
