Police create awareness ahead of festive season
“Burglaries increase at this time of the year and we are here to provide businesses and homeowners with ways to protect themselves."
Members of the police in the West Rand District launched an awareness campaign in Muldersdrift on September 28. The group included several police officers from different precincts spreading vital crime-fighting tips and information.

Captain Raymond Sebonyane said the campaign started at Tarlton Primary School where they spoke to the learners about issues such as teenage pregnancy and human trafficking. “Here at Muldersdrift Clinic we are addressing domestic violence and related issues. We will also be going to Rietfontein because of the recurring house and business robberies.”

While handing out flyers at Rietfontein Supermarket, Sergeant Sabelo Simelane said they were starting the awareness campaign ahead of the festive season when businesses are often vulnerable to vandalism and theft. “Burglaries increase at this time of the year and we are here to provide businesses and homeowners with ways to protect themselves. We will intensify personnel in the area so that we have the manpower to do more patrols. We know that Rietfontein is very problematic.”

Jeffrey Mapila, production manager at Random Harvest in Muldersdrift said their premises had not been targeted in a while but they have regular patrols at night. “When we had incidents in the past, the response from the police was really good. There are patrols and night watchers, and we have armed response.”
