Michael Fana Motaung, EFF local government elections candidate councillor for Ward 84, recently answered questions regarding the upcoming elections.
Here are some questions answered by the candidate:
Q: What would you do differently to the current ward councillor?
A: Work closely with ward committee members. Have quarterly community meetings within each of the seven voting districts. Meetings can be held over MS Teams or Zoom to accommodate everyone. Be on the ground with people and understand all their needs and frustrations. Be pro-active and a councillor who is available and ready to serve the people.
Q: How have you been involved in the community?
A: I have been involved in the illegal evictions of tenants in Roodepoort. Resolved the water crisis experienced by the Horison Clinic. Have contributed towards a number of NGOs such as the Dora’s Arch. I have worked with young people in the fight against drugs, encouraging them to be involved in sports and recreational activities.
Q: What past experiences make you uniquely qualified for this role?
A: I have previously worked closely with the former ward councillors and thus gained a lot of experience in the process. Listening to the people, acting and giving feedback are very important.
Q: What is your vision for your ward?
A: To have a non-racial, non-sexist, crime-free, drugs-free, clean, safe and economical progressive Roodepoort CBD where everyone is thriving.
Q: How do you feel this vision can be achieved?
A: The vision can be achieved through the involvement and collaboration of all relevant and key stakeholders such as community leaders, ward committees, religious leaders and business, and empowerment of young people.
Q: How does your party mirror your personal beliefs?
A: Non-racialism, non-sexist, building economically viable and progressive communities, cities and towns.
Q: In 50 words or less, tell the residents of your ward why they should vote for you.
A: Building a ward where aging infrastructure such as drainage, electricity and roads are attended to. Building a separate market for street vendors, hawkers and small businesses thus resulting in a clean, safe, unpopulated, economically viable and progressive Roodepoort CBD. Fighting crime and drug abuse. Refurbishment of sport and recreational facilities.
