Lions pours a cup for cancer awareness

'This is such a special project for us as we remember those who fought, and celebrate the survivors.'

A cancer diagnosis can be devastating – not just for the patients but for the people who support them too. Often, those in a caring role are struggling to come to terms with it as well.

In efforts to celebrate the fighters, the warriors and the carers, the Lions Club of Wilro Park recently hosted their annual Cuppa for Cansa and Cancer Awareness Month event. On Saturday, October 9 they welcomed 80 guests who joined in the high tea event which was filled with tears, laughter and messages of hope.

“This is such a special project for us as we remember those who fought, and celebrate the survivors. We were super excited to have our guests share their stories and their inspiring journeys, and we wish to remind them to take care of themselves,” club president Sandy van Heerden said.

Going through cancer is often described as an emotional roller coaster, with many ups and downs. However, having supportive friends and family during treatment can be extremely helpful.

Commending these support systems was Wilro Park Lions convener and MC, Shirley Gerhard. After her heartfelt message she welcomed Pieter le Roux to the podium.

Pieter is an Imago Clinical Therapist and a qualified business and life coach. In 2014 he was diagnosed with a very rare leukaemia. After a very tough chemo process and bone marrow transplant, he is grateful to be fully healed today.

He is currently employed at a haematology practice which solely focuses on blood cancers. There he guides and supports patients and families through this very difficult time in their lives.

“The first rule is kindness. Be kind towards yourself, your body and your mind. Through all this, it’s important to remember that just to be alive is a miracle. We often see the end destination, but we don’t see the little steps we need to take to get there. We need to acknowledge that each single step is just as wonderful and glorious as the destination,” he said.

Next was cancer survivor and former Wilro Lions Club member Karin Diederichs who shared her story and emotional journey to healing and recovery. Last but not least was Kumari Naidoo – daughter of past club president and member, Rajes Naidoo – who paid tribute to her mother who sadly passed away earlier this year. She is dearly missed and fondly remembered by many.

According to Sandy all proceeds were handed over to Cansa West Rand.

“The Lions Club of Wilro Park would like to thank all guests and guest speakers for joining us to make a difference, and for their kind and generous donations. Kindness from the heart always matters,” she concluded.

“I would also like to thank our Lions members who worked so hard to turn our club house into a pretty and welcoming venue. We had such a nice time with all the guests and we appreciate all efforts which went into the sweet and savoury treats. We trust everyone had a wonderful time.”
