CMR Golf Club and beer brand launch new condensed golfing format

SuperSixes is a great way to get new and young players on the course

Cricket has T20, rugby has sevens, soccer has five-a-side and now golf has a condensed version too.

Aimed at creating a more quick-fire way to tackle an afternoon of golf, a six-hole shootout has been formulated by CMR Golf Club. Together with Castle Lite, CMR launched the SuperSixes format on Friday afternoon, November 12.

Not to be confused with round-robin sixes or other 18-hole scoring formats, the SuperSixes is a fresh format that covers multiple objectives. The six-hole game enables the club to offer beginners a gentle pathway into a full course environment while also providing the youth with a stepping stone or sample of the great game. Six holes is also a perfect opportunity to get a game in after a morning in the boardroom.

The course layout at CMR lends itself perfectly to the format as the first, second and third holes form a perfect loop with holes seven, eight and nine. In the SuperSixes, each combination of holes must include a par five and a par three, with this front nine loop ticking all the boxes as well as throwing in the course’s stroke one and three holes to ensure golfers are not short-changed on difficulty.

Castle Lite has been enthusiastic title sponsors while E-Z-GO enticed par three surgeons with a golf cart for anyone who could hit a hole-in-one on the 8th green. “It is an awesome concept and Castle Lite is always at the forefront of innovation. The competition was intense throughout the six holes so this format has great potential,” said Castle Lite Regional Sales Manager, Charles Marais.

Golf can often be an all-day commitment but this six-hole version can be a worthwhile compromise to get some time on the course. “It is great because you still have time to pick up the kids after school and bring them with,” said Lehlohonolo Molloyi, after finishing his six. His playing partner, Lester Busby, added, “It fits well into a work day if you still have some things to get done in the morning”.

Club vice-chairman, Sikender Wadvalla hopes the SuperSixes can be a springboard for other events like an evening fun run, father-and-sons days, or junior introductory leagues. “We are a people’s club. We have a fantastic development programme, and we have our community and the growth of the game at heart with everything we do,” said Sikender. With innovation and imagination, all is done with the primary aim of getting golfers back on CMR’s historic fairways and greens.
