Zandspuit holds prayer meeting on World Aids Day
The gathering was to pray and remember all the lives lost to Aids and other pandemics
Stakeholders and community leaders in Zandspruit commemorated World Aids Day on December 1 with prayer in remembrance of all the lives lost.
Pastor Dumisane Mkhaliphi began the proceedings by thanking the organisers of the meeting. “Our prayers this morning are also petitions for those who aren’t here; we are here to pray on their behalf. There are people who are no longer here because of AIDS and other pandemics such as gender-based violence which is a silent pandemic.
“Right now we are dealing with the coronavirus; however, there have been other pandemics.” He said residents should pray for themselves and everyone else in Zandspruit.

Ward 114 councillor Tebogo Mangena urged community members to continue with programmes such as the one held on Wednesday morning, even if people don’t show up. “People should see that there is unity and community amongst us. We are also in the middle of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. I am going to work closely with pastors because we need prayers in Zandspruit.” Mangena said developing Zandspruit was the responsibility of every resident. “We need to adopt development and we need to have all stakeholders together because one head cannot make all the decisions. We should all work together.”

The gathering was held to honour the lives lost to human trafficking, GBV, crime and the current pandemic. The morning began with hymns and prayer, and concluded with candles being lit for all the lives that have been lost.
