Tough times for baby sanctuary
Even though they are thankful for the contributions they do receive, they are taking a huge strain.

When you’ve found your true calling, it starts off as a whisper and then becomes a roar. It cannot be ignored and won’t go away.
Even when things get hard, your passion will be your drive. Even though Just in Time (JIT) Baby Sanctuary founder, Georgina Caetano is committed to giving abandoned babies a second chance in life, her passion alone is not enough to keep the sanctuary afloat.
“It has been a hard year and we have lost a lot of support. We started gaining a momentum when we originally opened in Randfontein, but when we came to Discovery we had to start all over again,” she said.
Although they might have broadened their prospective donor base, Georgina added that they now also have to ‘compete’ with a bigger pool of NGOs.
“It’s all about talking to the hearts of people. Some people have a soft spot in their hearts for animals or disabled persons, while others care more for the elderly or children’s homes,” she said.
Even though they are thankful for the contributions they do receive, they are taking a huge strain due to the loss of support. Georgina and her team wish to remind the community that they are still there and in dire need of help.

“Covid has been hard on everybody. We are tired and we are emotionally drained, but we have to keep on fighting for the little ones. They need us now more than ever. I know everyone has a lot on their plate at the moment, but we absolutely need any support we can get right now,” Georgina said.
The sanctuary is in dire need of items such as formula, groceries, toilet paper and pre-paid electricity as well as general financial support and sponsorships for school fees. They are currently homing 11 children (in various stages of safe care) ranging from birth to six years.
She would also like to remind the community of their baby saver, which is situated at the sanctuary at 70 Kliprand Street in Discovery. This is a unit with an alarm system where one can safely and anonymously relinquish a baby rather than dumping it.
“We don’t encourage abandonment but rather relinquishment. Mothers who are afraid should know that there is a safer option,” she concluded.
