Earth Centre provides free therapy to Zandspruit students

The center celebrated World Disability Day by offering free horse riding therapy for students from Zandspruit

The Earth Centre in Ruimisg hosted two learners from Zandspruit for their disability outreach and to mark World Disability Day on December 3.

Fundraiser, Julia Morris said the day was about recognising disabilities throughout the world and trying to create more awareness, “Disabilities are often swept underneath the carpet.

‘If you don’t see it, you don’t have to acknowledge it.’ There are thousands of children who have disabilities and the majority of them don’t have access to therapy because they can’t afford it. That’s what we do, we provide the therapy for these children free of charge. Everybody has the right to therapy.”

The two learners from Zandspruit Primary School were taken through warm-up drills on the horses while riding in circles, before going for longer rides on the grounds. Morris said the length of the rising sessions is dependent on how much the rider can take. “Normal sessions are half an hour and it depends on how long the rider can cope in terms of strength and endurance,” Julia concluded.
