‘The power of a promise matters’ – Strubens Valley businesswoman
Despite the ups and downs of owning a business, Nickey kept her promise and Nellie is now in her final year of high school.
School is the foremost fountain of knowledge children are exposed to as it presents the opportunity for them to acquire knowledge in various fields.
Entrepreneur, business owner and manager of Curves for Women Strubens Valley, Nickey Seger is keeping the promise she made to ensure that Nellie Khuzwayo finishes her Grade 12.
In 2005 Nickey met Goodwill Khuzwayo while working together at Scuba City in Ferndale. Nickey saw huge potential in him despite being disabled after a near-fatal taxi accident, and wrote in for a 94.7 Christmas wish every year for three years until he and his family were chosen.
As part of Goodwill’s wish, his daughter Nellie’s fees at a private school in Cosmo City were paid for one year.

After that year Goodwill had no option but to enrol Nellie in a government school again because he could not afford the private school fees at the time.
One day, while chatting to Nellie, Nickey was horrified to hear that the kids in her Grade 3 class were fighting about who was allowed to sell drugs in the class.
She decided to step in and paid Nellie’s fees at a private school until she finished high school.
Despite the ups and downs of owning a business, Nickey kept her promise and Nellie is now in her final year of high school.
Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its devastating impact on her business, Nickey is now unable to pay for Nellie’s final year of tuition.
For this reason she is reaching out to all members of the community to help Nellie finish her schooling while demonstrating to the country that ‘the power of a promise matters’.
“No matter your circumstances one can always rise above it, make a plan and maintain one’s integrity,” said Nickey.
Nickey has committed to running a half marathon (21,1km) for 14 consecutive days from February 1 to 14 to raise funds for Nellie’s school fees and give a new spin of what love can look like during the month of love.
Nickey told the Northsider that Nellie`s tuition for this year is R75 600, which is R6 300 per month.
For Nickey to pay for Nellie`s school fees the goal is to raise R5 400 per day, which is R258 per kilometre; however, any donation small or large will be welcomed.
Should Nickey raise more than the campaign goal, the additional money will be put into a fund to any additional schooling expenses for 2022.
Nellie is now 18 years old and extremely excited to start Grade 12. Her lifelong dream is to obtain her degree in nursing as she is passionate about helping people.
