Car careens down embankment after wet-weather crash on Christiaan de Wet Road

No serious injuries reported but road closed for three hours in order to retrieve a vehicle.

A motor vehicle hurtled down an embankment after a three-car collision, January 26

The three vehicles collided on Christiaan de Wet Road along the bend before the ascent to the Wilgerood Road intersection. Shortly before 18:00 on Wednesday evening, the driver of a grey hatchback lost control taking the corner, hitting a silver SUV, which was then struck by a third vehicle travelling behind them. As a result, the SUV plunged over the barriers, down the hill and into the field below.

Patrollers from the Honeydew Community Policing Forum helped to secure the scene, as the road in both directions was closed. The stricken SUV took three hours to recover and fortunately there were no serious injuries reported. The cause of the accident is believed to have been a large pool of water that the grey hatchback encountered at the bottom of the corner. Heavy downpours caused the inside left shoulder of the road to become waterlogged and a severe hazard on a busy road.

“As this stretch is a national road not managed by Johannesburg Road Agency, we have already escalated the matter of the lack of drainage which causes these massive puddles of water. We hope that working in conjunction with the relevant stakeholders this will be resolved before we see a more serious incident here,” stated Honeydew CPF PRO, Michael Steyn.

“We thank the patrollers who came out and got sopping wet to assist services on scene, and JMPD that assisted with the road closure to make sure everyone on scene was safe,” added Michael.
