Public urged to report vervet monkey sightings to CLAW
The monkeys are not believed to be a danger to children or pets, but their roaming instincts may lead them into areas populated by humans.
The public are urged to be aware of vervet monkeys that may be passing through the suburbs.
Two of the small primates were reportedly spotted on Judd Street on January 26, and residents are urged to relay any sighting to Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW). The organisation has recorded several successful primate rescues in recent weeks and months, and is well-equipped to handle the vervets. “There is nothing to be alarmed about, it’s a perfectly natural thing for them to leave their troops and seek other troops,” said CLAW’s Cora Bailey.
The monkeys are not believed to be a danger to children or pets, but their roaming instincts may lead them into areas populated by humans. They can often be cornered by people who regard them as pests, resulting in harm or even death for the monkey. Please report any sightings to Cora on 076 850 4466.
