SWGC Masters held to a 2–2 draw by Meadowlands

Despite the wet conditions SWGC Masters enjoyed a lion's share of possession but could not convert their good fortune in a scrappy match during which shots on target were far and few between.

While the heavy rain and grey skies prompted flash-flood warnings on Sunday, January 30, South West Gauteng TVET College (SWGC) Masters welcomed their opponents Meadowlands Masters for a friendly encounter on the soccer field ahead of their Masters League Stream 2 fixtures of the season.

The visitors wasted no time and drew first blood courtesy of a goalkeeping error that saw the home team trail by a goal in the early stages of the match.

SWGC Masters fixed their defensive line and completed a series of offensive passes that enabled their goal poacher Mandla Sibanda to get the equaliser ten minutes before the half-hour mark.

Meadowlands forced two corners in the opening minutes of the second half after their attackers, making the most of loose marking, ran into spaces in the SWGC Masters defence.

Nothing came of the visitors’ set pieces, as their shots were easily cleared by SWGC Masters rear guard.

Around the 70th minute the home side fashioned a scoring chance in quick succession when Sibanda held off two defenders and set up fellow strike Siphosihle Mathe to make the score 2–1.

The lead was short-lived as Meadowlands equalised through a powerful shot that exposed the goalkeeper’s guarding of the first pole and sloppy positioning.

The match ended in a draw, and both teams agreed that they gained the much-needed game time before the opening of the season.

SWGC Masters will look to improve from their last Masters League Stream 2 fixture against Honeydew Police last October that saw them suffer a 7–2 defeat at Boskop Primary School.
