Outreach for the Aged celebrates long life with golf day
CMR Golf Club legend honoured as first face of an annual event.
Life’s secret may be about staying out the rough and keeping it on the fairway.
Celebrating longevity through the grand game of golf, Outreach for the Aged (OftA) held their inaugural golf day on January 30. Each year the OftA golf day will select one elderly personality to be the face of the event, with the first honour falling to 94-year-old Goolam ‘Tommy’ Richards. A field of 134 golfers toured the lush 18 holes of the CMR golf course in a positive promotion of vitality.

The man of the hour was chaperoned around the course by multiple generations of family members as he went about his game with a swing any young man would be jealous of. Once the rounds were complete, a Covid-responsible prize-giving and dinner was held at a venue a short distance away. OftA runs a feeding programme for the elderly at Donovan MacDonald Retirement Home, and the centre’s main hall was the venue for the day’s final toast.

“Thanks to the sponsors and the many, many more individuals, too numerous to mention, as well as the countless volunteers who gave their time and labour. The first golf day had the desired effect of raising awareness of the plight of the elderly, bringing a diverse group of people together, and forging new partnerships to promote dignity, healthcare and wellness for the elderly,” said Outreach for the Aged board member, Nadiem Solomon.

The list of sponsors for the day featured Uranus Investment Holdings, PPC Cement, Park Avenue Stationers, Florida Muslim Meats, and Rawsons Property Group. Other contributors Nadiem wished to thank were Sullie’s Fabrics, Stargate Scientific, Bricks 4 Africa, PC Tech, Sooffah guesthouse, Rescue 786, and Sorbet Honeydew. Not to be excluded, Magleras golf group, Oddly Designs, Inzpire Health, I.C.E. and Maraisburg CPF and of course, CMR Gold Club all assisted to make the day worthy of the man they celebrated.
