Lantern shines a light in the dark

Learners were eager to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Love takes many forms. Every year Lantern School takes pleasure in spreading some love in the form of a Canned Food Drive.

This year was no different when learners who donated a can of food were given the opportunity to wear pink, red and white in celebration of Valentine’s Day. According to one of the coordinators, Joanne Rossouw the learners were eager to help those less fortunate than themselves.

“A total of 1 886 cans were collected. This is the most since the drive started four years ago,” she explained.

On Monday, February 14 learners arranged the cans in a lovely heart shape on the school quad to show off their achievement. The cans were subsequently divided between the Lantern Feeding Scheme, Round Table Florida and the Wilro Park Lions Club, which in turn will be donated to families and organisations in need.

“Classes also competed to bring the most cans with the incentive of receiving a prize (pizza and snacks for the class). We hope that the giving spirit of our learners continues to go from strength to strength,” Joanne said.

“Thank you to all learners, parents, staff, fellow drive coordinators (Altea van der Merwe and Anke Bester) who contributed to the Canned Food Drive. This year was our most successful yet, and we couldn’t have done it without everybody’s support.”
