Roodepoort Angling Club completes successful dual-weekend competition
Eugene Lombard and Steve le Roux bag the weekend's heaviest catches
Surrounded by noises of a bustling city, the eyes at the water’s edge focus only on what is at the end of the reel.
Roodepoort Angling Club’s love of reel and rod could not be contained to just one weekend. Bursting the banks, the competition needed to be held over two weekends to give every enthusiastic participant a fair chance to hook the crafty carp that regularly tease the water-based hunters.
From Friday February 25 to Sunday February 27 the first batch of anglers occupied the lake while March 4 to 6 was group number two’s chance.

Fighting off the elements, the darkness, the fatigue and the banter, Eugene Lombard and Roland Podwelis would tilt the needle of the scale the most on the first weekend. Shane Kruger and Pedro Silva came second with a bag weight of 26,5kg, just one ‘weigher’ behind Eugene and Roland’s combined bag of 30,86kg. Eugene would add a personal accolade, bagging the fish with a 12,34kg reel-in.

On to the second weekend and husband and wife team Steve and Vanessa le Roux would come out on top. When an angler pulls in a personal best, it is customary to dump a bucket of water on their head, and both Steve and Vanessa would end up drenched. Both hauled in their biggest ever, with Steve’s 13,96kg worth of carp also the best of the weekend, and enough to propel the peg to a winning total of 35,42kg.
