Power failure at Orlando power station causing Roodepoort taps to run dry

Multiple power outages across the city creating a bleak start to the long weekend.

Many homes across Roodepoort have been without electricity since Friday night and now the water may become scarce too.

Johannesburg Water have confirmed that a power failure at the Orlando power station is effecting the water supply in Roodepoort.

A fire at the Eldorado Park substation caused a power cut at the Orlando switching station which in turn cut power to the Eikenhof substation, resulting in the taps across western Johannesburg to run dry.

“Although a team has been dispatched to site, areas in Randburg, Lenasia and Soweto will soon be effected,” said Johannesburg Water in their Good Friday statement. “We are awaiting feedback from both City Power as well as Rand Water on the extent of the damage and how long it will take to restore services,” it continued.

With rain scheduled for Saturday morning through to Sunday, the clock is ticking for City Power to rescue the Easter weekend.
