Kruinpark residents learn the secret to aging well

While it is a known fact that physical activity is a cornerstone of healthy aging, Dr Coetzer explained that there is much more to it.

Many physical abilities decline with aging, including strength, swiftness and stamina. In addition to these muscle-related declines, there are also changes that occur in coordinating the movements of the body.

In an effort to address such common health issues associated with aging, Dr Susan Coetzer from Life Flora Hospital paid a special visit to the Kruinpark Retirement Village. She is a sub-specialist geriatrician/ specialist physician who is passionate about the elderly and their general well-being.

After speaking with her audience, each resident was invited to the adjacent hall to have their blood pressure and blood sugar levels tested. While waiting for their health tests to be conducted, the residents were treated to some divine cappuccinos, rusks and popcorn.

“The residents received the information very positively with lots of questions and comments to the admin to start more group activities including exercise. This is a really good thing because the most important aspect to aging is to keep moving physically.”

She went on to explain that this enables the elderly to stay independent and decreases risks for common problems that affect them as they get older.

“It was a real honour and a privilege for our residents to be afforded a visit from Life Flora Hospital. The talk by Dr Susan Coetzer was received with great enthusiasm, as is evident from the positive feedback and appreciation we have received,” Kruinpark Retirement Village head sister, Sue Anderson said.

“Our residents really enjoyed the special treats while waiting for their free health screening tests conducted by medical staff from the hospital. Thank you so much to Lauren van Zanten, the marketing manager, and her team at Life Flora Hospital for arranging this outreach. What a great initiative, and a real treat for our old folk!”

While there were lots of requests for a follow-up visit from Dr Coetzer and Life Flora Hospital, they will be looking to visit other retirement villages in the area.
