CoSacsa Gauteng hosts a successful Arts and Culture Competition

"The competition experienced its own challenges that were overcome by the overall success of the event."

The weekend of June 18 and 19 saw the CoSacsa Gauteng Arts and Culture Competition get underway at the South West Gauteng TVET College, Molapo campus.

The competition was brought to a halt by the Covid-19 pandemic, which had a huge impact on the CoSacsa Arts and Culture activities nationally.

According to the organisers, the theme for 2022 was ‘Disaster’ with the sub-themes ‘Covid-19’, ‘Gender-based violence’ (GBV), ‘HIV/AIDS’, ‘Tuberculosis’ (TB), ‘Floods’, ‘Unrests’ and ‘Corruption’.

The eight affiliated colleges under CoSacsa Gauteng, Central Johannesburg College, Ekurhuleni East College, Sedibeng College, South West Gauteng College, Tshwane North College, Tshwane South College, and Western College took part in the competition.

“Art is the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. Art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves through visual art; and art is something that makes us more thoughtful and well-rounded humans. Culture plays an important role in the development of any nation; it represents a set of shared attitudes, values, goals and practices. A country as diverse as ours is symbolised by the plurality of its culture. South Africa has one of the largest collections of performing arts namely song, drama, dance and freestyle,” said CoSacsa marketing and communications officer, Tshepo Mokoena.

“The Provincial structure is honoured to have given the platform to their students to showcase their skills and talents in all the categories. It is a privilege to be part of the organising team for the Arts and Culture competition in ensuring that we contribute towards students’ development and enrichment towards showcasing their talents and skills. The competition experienced its own challenges that were overcome by the overall success of the event. The organisation is delighted that the competition took place after Covid-19 protocols and restrictions put all student activities on hold,” Tshepo concluded.
