The Record has been made aware of a new way that dogs are poisoned, which entails tennis balls being filled and rubbed in the deadly poison copper sulfate .

Most dogs love to chase a ball, unfortunately in this case the ball is not an innocent toy. Dog poisonings by this method have been reported in Roodepoort recently, and members of the public are advised to be alert.

Every dog owner needs to know what to do if a dog has been exposed to one of the many kinds of toxic substances.

If you suspect your pet has been poisoned, you need to act quickly. Even if you think the symptoms seem mild, their condition can quickly worsen as they metabolise the toxic substance.

What to do when you suspect that your pet has been poisoned?

• Call your vet’s emergency number and let them know you’re on the way.

• If you know what poisoned your dog had ingested, collect a sample to take to the vet.

• If you have an emergency poisoning kit, you can administer it – but this shouldn’t take priority over getting the dog to the vet as quickly as possible.

• If your pet has been poisoned maliciously, alert your security company and if possible have someone attend to your home. If the poisoning is part of a planned break-in, criminals are likely to seize this opportunity at a quiet house.

• When transporting your pet, use a blanket or towel as a stretcher. This will make it easier to carry it and limit the chance of the dog accidentally biting you if it becomes distressed.
